Description
Do you ever hunger for the Word of God?
After Jesus was baptized in the river Jordan by John (the baptist) Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted [or tested] by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, He was hungry. The tempter (the devil) came to Him and said, If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread. Jesus answered, It is written: Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God. Matthew 4:1-4
The Amplified Classical Bible puts Matthew 4:4 this way: Man shall not LIVE and be UPHELD and SUSTAINED by bread alone, but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of God. (The Greek word for LIVE means to be KEPT ALIVE.)
Jesus quoted Deuteronomy 8:3 to the devil:
He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.
